We learn in community. These local organizations provide opportunities for immersion and participation; apprenticeships, internships, part-time work, classes, workshops, scientific research, activism, entrepreneurship, vocational training, arts, community service, and more.
The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition - Natural literacy education, conservation, citizen science, trail building in the Belfast Bay Watershed.
Torchlight Media - Youth focused media lab empowering local youth as storytellers, media creators and culture makers.
The Game Loft - Fostering positive youth development through non-electronic games.
Belfast Free Library - Our own world class public library, a stone’s throw from the Dory Learning Center, with a wealth of print and digital resources, teen room, meeting space, gallery and more.
Maine Youth Power - A coalition of rural and suburban youth organizing various local campaigns. Skill building in media literacy, solidarity and legislative activism.
Waldo County Technical Center - Technical training in carpentry, electrical, welding, auto mechanics, small engines, graphic design, CNA certification, computers, culinary, and more.
Belfast Area High School - All academic classes, clubs and sports teams are available to Dory students who live in RSU 71 and meet state vaccination requirements.
WBFY Belfast Community Radio - Local radio featuring eclectic music and local musicians, broadcasting from their studio at Waterfall Arts .
Belfast Dance Studio - Weekly offerings in dance, movement exploration, yoga, martial arts, meditation and more.
Hurricane Island Institute for Science and Leadership - A research facility and education center focused on marine science, sustainability and environmental leadership.
Coastal Mountains Land Trust - Permanently conserving land in our region. Trail building, natural literacy programs and land stewardship.
The Rockweed Center - A community center in downtown Belfast offering free gathering space with a friendly inclusive atmosphere.
Hawthorne Theater and Arts Collective - A local arts nonprofit formed to preserve and revitalize Belfast’s Colonial Theater.
Maine Farmland Trust - Protecting farmland, supporting farmers and advancing the future of farming in Maine.
Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association - One of the largest and oldest organic associations in the U.S. Education, Training and Advocacy.

North Star Teens - A self-directed learning center in Western Mass that has been an inspiration to us.
The Teenage Liberation Handbook by Grace Llewellyn - A power ballad to unschooling first published in 1991. Despite some flaws, much of it has aged pretty well. Make sure you get the most recent edition, which includes a wealth of digital resources.
Alliance for Self-Directed Education - A non-profit dedicated to advancing self-directed learning. Lots of resources and community.
